Visit the Zeller Kiosk

The central meeting point at the preserve is the Zeller Kiosk, named after long-time preserve hosts Zee and Betty Zeller.

The kiosk is an information center, staffed by volunteers during busy times. But even when not staffed, there is a wealth of information in the displays covering birds, reptiles, mammals, cultural history, and current activities. The kiosk leads to the main trails throughout the preserve.

Trail maps are available, which show each of the trails, closed areas, the length and level of difficulty.

Overhead, you will see images of birds in the sky, just as they appear when looking up in real life. The birds are identified on panels on the sides of the kiosk area.

Underfoot, you will see footprints in the concrete. A brochure at the kiosk identifies what animal made each footprint. As you walk the trails in the preserve, you will almost certainly see some of these, and you will know who made them!

On the walls at the kiosk are 6 display cabinets devoted to different aspects of the preserve’s biology and history.

Pictures of dozens of birds often seen in the preserve, and some rarely seen.

The geological features of the preserve, including the Morongo Valley Fault, which you can see on the Mesquite trail.

Insects and butterflies.

Snakes and lizards that are common in the preserve in the summer.

Medicinal plants used by the native Americans.

Mammals, like the mule deer, you may very well see on a trail.
