Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is a small but dedicated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on ensuring the responsible stewardship and visitation of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. 

Nestled in the Little San Bernardino Mountains, Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is home to one of California’s most important cottonwood and willow riparian habitats. It provides a vital sanctuary for migratory birds, a diverse array of wildlife, and visitors seeking a meaningful connection with nature. 

Position Overview 

We are looking for an organized and service-oriented Administrative Assistant to help support our programs and daily operations, advancing the mission of Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. 

The Administrative Assistant reports directly to the Executive Director and assists with a variety of organizational tasks, including donor and volunteer communications, record keeping, fundraising support, social media management, outreach, retail operations, and general administrative duties. 

This role combines office-based administrative work with on-site support for preserve programs and events. The Administrative Assistant will collaborate closely with the organization’s leadership, volunteers, visitors, partner agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management and the County of San Bernardino, and community members. 

This is a part-time position, averaging 30 hours per week. Because the preserve is open every day of the year, the schedule will require some weekend and holiday shifts. 

Key Qualifications 

We understand that applicants bring a variety of professional backgrounds and experiences. The following qualifications outline the most important skills and experience needed for this role: 

● An associate or bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required. Coursework or experience in nonprofit administration, communications, environmental education, or related fields is advantageous. 

● Experience in administrative support, office management, nonprofit operations, or customer service. 

● Familiarity with donor databases, CRM systems, or email marketing platforms. 

Desired Skills and Attributes 

● Strong organizational and time management abilities 

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

● Self-motivated and able to handle multiple projects and priorities, with proficiency in office technology and software, including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Publisher, Google Workspace, CRM systems, Canva or basic design tools, and standard office equipment 

● Comfortable managing social media platforms and supporting basic marketing efforts 

● Friendly, professional, and collaborative attitude when working with staff, volunteers, donors, and visitors 

● Has interest in conservation, public lands, environmental education, or the natural world 

● Bilingual skills are a plus 

Physical Requirements & Work Conditions 

● Ability to walk up to 6 miles per day on uneven terrain in various weather conditions 

● Ability to lift, pull, and push up to 30 pounds 

● Work in a non-traditional office environment 

Schedule and Benefits 

● Part-time, minimum of 30 hours per week 

● Weekend and holiday work as needed 

● Paid vacation and sick leave provided 

● Salary: $22.00-$25.00 per hour
